Thomastown is an on-site performance filmed in a partially constructed warehouse in Melbourne's outer suburbs. Reminiscent of teenage boredom and hanging out in places you shouldn't, the work is an improvised response to an encounter with the architectural space and discarded objects found at the site. The kicking of nuts and bolts brings forth the resonant sound potential and temporarily allows the performer to lay claim to her environment. Thomastown contemplates the link between risk taking – being potentially vulnerable through isolation – and a sense of personal freedom. Here the camera takes on the role of silent observer and witness to a private moment of play.
